So this was a dream book; and all the action was thrilling。 I bookmarked so many things, and great quotes。 The characters were great, really loved the way the main female character, Daphne, was portrayed。 Incredible strength, healing, character growth, and overall just so much badass all in one person。 Then for Apollo, the characteristics of this god were absolutely spot on! The way he interacted with the other gods, the way he interacted with mortals, the way he interacted with Daphne。 The storyline as a whole was astonishing, I loved how detailed Claire was with staying with what the Greek mythology has told us。 From the way Claire wrote, in talking to her, and in watching her interviews for Daughter of Sparta; a reader can really see the commitment she had to this story and how she really wanted to stay true to it。 But yet, she wanted to add some of her own little twists and turns and made it spectacular。 So if you love Greek mythology with a little bit of a fictional twist, Daughter of Sparta is absolutely an incredible new choice in the new book world! And thank you so much Claire for all the hookups with this book! I can’t wait for book two! 。。。more

From the beginning, Daphne's story captivates the reader。 Claire M。 Andrews has managed to make such a dynamic character out of this minor figure in Greek mythology, and turn her into a strong-willed young woman who proves herself even in the face of adversity。 Daphne was an amazing heroine because you immediately root for her, and even when you think she is being pig-headed or making the wrong decision, you still root for her to survive and win。Claire does an amazing job crafting the cast of characters, many whom the reader knows from myth already, and making them fully come to life in slightly (or sometimes not so slightly) ways then what people are used to, and that is the genius of this book。 Such rich characters, even for the ones barely seen。 I love a great character-driven book, and Claire doesn't skimp on that。But this book isn't just character-driven, no Claire crafts an epic journey for Daphne, an action-pack, nerve-riddled, all-consuming journey。 Life hangs in the balance, and not just the life of Daphne, but the entire world as she knows it。 No pressure though。 The action is non-stop, and a lot of the journey is pulled from mythology, which lends a sense of familiarity to each scene。 But this is wholly original。Wholly original is the perfect two words to sum up the start to such an amazing series, whether that be a duology or more。 Claire really captures the essence of the book herself in the Author's Note, stating "[b]ut that is the beauty of myths, stories that are ever changing---we can take from them what is most relevant to us personally, and revel in fantasy" (Andrews, pg。 369, 2021)。 Fantasy lovers, mythology lovers, and action lovers are all going to need to add Daughter of Sparta by Claire M。 Andrews as soon as possible。 It is knock-out by a debut author, and no one will be disappointed。 。。。more

A welcome addition to the collection of retellings of Greek mythology, Daughter of Sparta, takes on the tale of Daphne and Apollo。 I loved the mashing of stories and myths that made this story exciting and interesting。 As a fan of Greek mythology I found myself squealing and giddy with each new character introduction and the epic worldbuilding。 A great start to a new series!

Major liberties were taken in this retelling, and it really departs from the original tale of Apollo and Daphne。 At this point, they shouldn't call it a reinterpretation, if the only thing that stays the same is the geographic location and that the two main characters are Apollo and a young warrior woman named Daphne。That being said, I wasn't grumpy with the route this story took。 Part of my positive reception to this book could be that my most recent Greek myth read was not well-received by me Major liberties were taken in this retelling, and it really departs from the original tale of Apollo and Daphne。 At this point, they shouldn't call it a reinterpretation, if the only thing that stays the same is the geographic location and that the two main characters are Apollo and a young warrior woman named Daphne。That being said, I wasn't grumpy with the route this story took。 Part of my positive reception to this book could be that my most recent Greek myth read was not well-received by me at all (ARIADNE by Jennifer Saint), so this one had a relatively low threshold to appease me。 Where the other book disappointed me so much with character depiction and (lack of) development, I appreciated how Daphne had depth as our main character。 Even Apollo, as fickle as the gods are, was more than just the pretty boy sun god。 For anyone who knows of Theseus, just take note his storyline (and what goes down with the Minotaur) will not be what you've most likely, classically, learned about him。 Didn't bother me because I wouldn't say I showed up to this story looking for total accuracy。What did bother me was the ending。 It felt rushed and full of forced cheesiness。 The resolution came too easily, especially since, throughout the entire book, the problem/conflict was talked about and portrayed as incredibly significant。 It was like the author totally knew all the fun stuff had just happened when we watched the characters do all these adventure-y things and then slapped on an ending because every book needs a conclusion of some sort。It looks like this is the first book in what may be a duology? Don't think I'll be reading the sequel, both because this first one isn't compelling me to plus book two features the Trojan War (and I'm just never excited to read about that)。 。。。more

I am always a sucker for mythology。 This gem gives you an extraordinary girl who has yet to discover her true identity/potential who is put toe-to-toe with gods。 LOVE IT! Daphne is such a powerhouse character with some bone-deep issue that through you journey comes face to face with them。 I enjoyed watching her grow into her potential。

This one works good as a stand alone, in that it wraps up the main plot/quest of this particular installment (retrieving or not retrieving the missing magical items) but leaves some of the bigger mysteries (her heritage, her relationship with Apollo, the status of some villains) still to come。 。。。more

You will be rooting for these two the entire book and getting impatient for the moment where they finally reveal their feelings (or do they?)。The historical world building really tied everything up nicely。 I loved how Andrews described the world and incorporated all these fascinating details。 Some details, as Andrews notes in the book, are not exactly 100% factual, but I honestly enjoyed the little twists on the facts。 And her writing。 I marked up Daughter of Sparta with so many sticky notes; there were so many quotes and memorable scenes that I loved。 Andrews’s writing is so lush and beautiful, with magnificently described scenes and epic battle moments。 I was, overall, so enamored with this story and the exquisite writing。All in all, Daughter of Sparta is a stunning debut and captivating first book。 I’m looking forward to more Daphne and Apollo。 Daughter of Sparta is out today so definitely consider picking up if you love Greek mythology retelling and enemies-to-lovers romance。 。。。more
